GMF, the railway vehicle maintenance company of COMSA Corporación, has just put into service the pit lathe for renewing wheel profiles and prolonging their useful life.
It is the first equipment of these characteristics that belongs to an independent maintenance company, since until now only some public railway operating companies and rolling stock manufacturers had similar equipment.
The equipment, which can treat Iberian gauge axles, makes it possible to adapt the wheel profiles to the tolerances required at any given time without disassembling the axles or bogies, thus reducing the time required to return the vehicle to operating conditions.
The supplier of the automatic and programmable lathe is the Spanish market leader Patentes Talgo, which started producing lathes for the railway sector in the 1980s.
The new lathe is on GMF’s premises in Constantí (Tarragona), a location that allows direct access from ADIF’s general interest rail network through a connection to the container terminal.
